Integrated Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (ICBT)

Integrated Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavior Therapy or the ICBT model combines Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to help address substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. ICBT is essentially a revised and updated version of previous iterations of the Motivational Enhancement Therapy/Cognitive Behavior Therapy manualized approaches. 

From the ICBT Manual:

“The treatment approach for mental disorders described in this guide follows a clinical method that draws on innovations and essential elements influenced by motivational interviewing (MI), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), mindfulness, values-based clinical practices, functional analysis, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Since the original guide was completed in 2013, we have continuously updated content to reflect (1) emerging science on behavioral health treatment and interventions; (2) recognition of gaps in what we have written, based on instructor and student feedback; and (3) a desire to incorporate our evolving social context reflecting social justice issues and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The ICBT manual includes 16 sessions focused on addressing substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. This approach can be done individually or with groups, has been used in a variety of treatment settings from outpatient to residential, and maintains a balance of offering a structured approach with capacity to individualize to meet clients’ needs.

C4BHI founder Dr. Win Turner is one of the co-authors and both Drs. Turner and Kamon have been involved in the continued development of future iterations of the ICBT manual and serve as national trainers in the use of this model.
