Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational Interviewing is "a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment.” (Miller & Rollnick, 2023)

Essentially, MI requires curiosity, deep listening and true regard for the person with whom you are engaging. Its also strategic in that you are helping to guide the person along in their journey of exploring change. To quote Stephen Rollnick, one of the founders of MI,

"Motivational interviewing is like soccer. Soccer is a simple game but it takes a lot of skill to do well."

Our trainers' approach help increase insight into your current use of MI and build on your skills to enhance your MI competence. MI is a lifelong journey that never ends. Our view is a person can always benefit from more MI training and practice.

MI began to be used when working with individuals struggling with substance use. Today, MI is utilized in a wide variety of settings and programs such as schools, medical settings, community justice centers, correctional facilities, and sports organizations.
